How to Choose an Island Destination

The holiday season has officially begun, and everyone is scrambling to find a place they can unwind at during the scorching summer months. When it comes to choosing the perfect holiday destination, islands are usually at the top of many people’s lists.

Who doesn’t want to lounge lazily on a pile of soft sand, listening to the ocean grinding rock into dust, while drinking your third cocktail since the morning? Or maybe you’re thinking of something more in line of standing on a piece of plastic at the crest of a wave, challenging the seas to a race to the shore? No, wait, I’ve got it this time. You are dreaming of cuddling rainbow-colored fish under the surface, while a song from Little Mermaid is playing in the background?

It looks like this is going to be more difficult than we previously thought. Everyone has their own idea of what a perfect island holiday is supposed to feel like, so it’s hard to recommend something that is guaranteed to suit everyone’s taste. So in order to make our job easier, we have decided to give you a little bit of everything. All you have to do is figure out your favorite island pastime, and consult the entries in the guide below.

Take a Swim around Bermuda

If you are the kind of person who likes to start their day with a morning swim, Bermuda is the place you should seriously consider for your next vacation. A former British colony, nowadays Bermuda is a highly sought-after destination for individuals that want to crawl, paddle, or glide their way across the surface of the Atlantic. For the best swimming experience, we recommend visiting Horseshoe Bay. The water is calm and temperate, there is plenty of room for everyone, and lifeguards regularly patrol the beaches during tourist season.

Maldives Scuba Diving

Scuba-dive at the Maldives

For those of you that like to explore the open sea in the company of our ocean-dwelling kin, the Maldives might just be the perfect island destination. Situated southwest off the coast of India, this chain of volcanic islands is surrounded by clear warm waters, which serve as a home for diverse marine flora and fauna. If swimming around coral reefs in the company of whale sharks, manta rays and moray eels is your idea of pleasant summer afternoon, all you have to do is arrange a scuba-diving trip with one of the many local operators.

Sunbathe on the Cayman Islands

The sea is nice and everything, but if you prefer to keep it at arm’s length while you absorb as much sunlight as your skin will hold, the Cayman Islands should definitely be on your shortlist. This Caribbean destination has warm, tropical climate year round, making it ideal for tourists that like to keep up their tan year-round. Be sure to visit the famous Seven Mile Beach – the 10km long unbroken seacoast covered in pale sand is simply breathtaking.

Water sports in Barbados

Engage in Beach Sports on Barbados

If vacation and rest refer to two entirely different things in your vocabulary, Barbados might be just the right place for your next action-packed holiday. In all honesty, this tiny Caribbean island has more to offer than places twice its size, but we picked it specifically for the beach-side activities it offers. Fans of kitesurfing, windsurfing, ziplining, as well as regular surfing will find much to love here. And if you get tired of moving about in the sweltering heat, you can sip a cocktail under a palm tree in one of the many beach-side bars and resorts around the island.

Sail around VaVa’u

If you own a yacht, well, you are one lucky person. With that being said, maybe the freedom to travel to basically any island around the world has made your choice of travel destination more difficult. Fortunately, we are here to help, and we suggest you to pay VaVa’u a visit. This small island in the Tonga archipelago in Indonesia is the sailing central of the South Pacific. It is famous for its translucent waters, humpback whale sightings, and the historic Neiafu harbor. Give it a visit if you are in the area.

Half moon party

Party at Ko Pha-Ngan

Finally, if you just want to let loose and party away from the mainland, you should book a trip to Ko Pha-Ngan, Thailand. Once a month, the whole island goes berserk under the light of the full-moon, partying until the sun rises in the morning (and possibly well into the day). The beaches are filled with party-goers from around the world, there is street-food on every corner, and mood-enhancers can be acquired without much difficulty, if you know the right people.

That about covers most of the common experiences people are looking for when going on an island trip. Needless to say, each of the places we’ve mentioned above has more to offer as well, so be sure to do some research before finalizing your travel itinerary.
